Indian Blackberry Ukadiche Modak

Ukadiche modak is a delicious traditional Maharashtrian delicacy which is made during Ganesh puja to worship Lord Ganesha. Modaks are made with steamed rice flour shells filled with filling made from freshly grated coconut, jaggery, nuts, flavored with cardamom powder and nutmeg. For this recipe adding Indian blackberry a.k.a. jamun puree to rice flour gave a beautiful color to the traditional modaks. The most important aspect of making modaks is getting the perfect shape which is done by making rice flour petals and requires some practice before you can get perfection. Filling Prepration
  1. Heat pan at medium heat. Roast poppy seeds and rava separately till slightly golden color. Once it's done, transfer it into a bowl. Add jaggery in same pan, wait till jaggery gets melted. Add freshly grated coconut, nuts, roasted rava & poppy seeds and mava into it. Stir the mixture it gets dry however make sure it not very dry. Add green cardamom powder and nutmeg powder and mix. Once it's done, turn off the heat. Keep the mixture aside to cool down.
Modak Prepration
  1. To make Jamun puree, remove seeds from 10 Jamuns. Grind Jamun and 4 tbsp grated beetroot in a grinder with 1/2 cup of water and make consistency of a puree.
  2. In a large pot, add 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup Jamun puree along with 1/4 tsp salt and 2 tbsp ghee. Bring it to boil at medium heat.
  3. Add rice flour to the boiling puree and cornstarch into it. Mix with rubber spatula and turn off the heat. Cover it and keep it aside for 5 minutes.
  4. After 5 minutes, apply some ghee on palm and knead the dough while it is warm to make a smooth soft dough.
  5. Divide the dough in 16 equal size dough ball and roll it into palm to make it smooth. Cover it with clear wrap or clean cloth.
  6. Pour some water on your palm, take one ball and flatten it using both palms to give it a puri shape.
  7. Now, dip your fingers into water using your fingers and thumb give a semi sphere shape to the dough ball. Make sure center is little thicker than rest of the surface. Fill some of the filling mixture into it and make petals all round.
  8. Dip your fingers into water and bring all petals towards the center gently using your fingers. Seal the edges together and give it modak shape.
  9. Make all modaks following the same process. Keep it covered.
  10. Prepare a steamer and heat water in it at medium heat. When steam starts coming out, place modak in the steaming pan and drop it in steamer and cover it with lid.
  11. Let the modak steam cook for 9-10 minutes. Once its done, remove it along with steamer pan and keep it aside and allow it to cool before taking out the modak from the pan. Pour some ghee on it.
  12. When it gets cool, take it out from the pan and place it in a plate or bowl and cover it. Depending on you steamer size, you may have to steam cook remaining modaks in batches.
  13. Delicious colorful blackberry ukadiche modaks are ready to be offered to Lord Ganesh to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi.
